Poster about Sea Nomads in Southeast Asia
During the Conference on Human Evolution in London me and Erika Schagaty presented a poster about sea nomads in Southeast Asia, where we summarize some of the key observations and conclusions we have made during our work with Bajau Laut. Erika Schagatay met Bajau Lautin eastern Indonesia and Orang Laut in western Indonesia already in the 1980s.

Thanks for the nice poster, Erik! I’m interested in the distribution of sea nomads (modern or historical) as shown in the center map. Do you have a clear version, or other similar maps? I remember there was a historical map in George Weber’s andaman.org, but unfortunately the site is now down… Chak

Hi Chak! Thanks for your comment … you can find the map in higher resolution here: https://theaquaticape.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/sea-nomads-of-southeast-asia-new.jpg. I have made the map and it is based on other researchers work, as for example Cynthia Chou (Orang Laut), Natasha Stacey and Clifford Sather (Bajau Laut) and Jacques Ivanoff (Moken). Many Bajau Laut have started to live in some places in Philippines very recently, and they are living on boats only in Sabah (Malaysia) and in the Gulf of Tomini (Sulawesi, Indonesia). There´s a good map showing the historical expansion of Bajau Laut here: http://www.uneed2know.eu/ultimate-underwater-human-hunter-bajau-fisherman-sulbin-aid-149 (scroll down). Regards, Erik
